Shauna Darcy is a young woman who struggles with depression, anxiety, and a vascular condition called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. But thanks to her service dog, Ruby, Shauna gets to live a normal life.
Ruby, the service dog
Shauna and Ruby hit it off right away when they first met. Shauna felt an instant connection with the sweet pooch. She decided to take Ruby home and train to help her deal with anxiety, depression, and agoraphobia. Ruby turned out to be an excellent service dog and has immensely helped her live a good life.
But Shauna soon discovered that Ruby could do so much more. Shauna realized that the smart dog could also detect changes in her heart rate. And when she does, the dog gives Shauna a paw. At first, Shauna thought it funny and amusing, but when Ruby pawed her too often, Shauna decided to get herself checked.
Shauna then discovered that she has Ehlers-Dandlos syndrome, a vascular condition that affects the blood vessels, skin, and joints. It may also weaken the heart, rupture the blood vessels, and may lead to death.
We’re in this together, mom
Since then, Shauna trained Ruby to alert her when there are changes in her cardiac system. In the even that Shauna passes out, Ruby would use her body to put pressure on her mom and lick her until she wakes up. Ruby also knows how to give Shauna medications in case of panic attacks.
One day, Ruby was giving Shauna the signals that something was wrong. Shauna didn’t feel anything, but she still called the ambulance. And Ruby did the right thing because the doctors found out that Shauna was going into a condition called atrial fibrillation. Shauna felt so much pain that she was almost unconscious when help arrived.
Shauna had to stay in the hospital, and Ruby was right beside her throughout. The dog never left her side, and let her know she’s not going anywhere. Shauna has a lot to deal with, but she survives because of Ruby. The devoted service dog is her lifesaver, and Shauna couldn’t be more grateful to her.
